Most jewellery workshops worldwide source pearls as finished components rather than operating their own farms, and pricing follows international grading and export structures rather than local proximity to production.
South Sea pearls represent one of the few areas where Indonesia holds direct upstream production capacity within the global jewellery supply chain. Cultured South Sea pearls are produced in marine regions such as Lombok, Sulawesi, and the Moluccas, positioning Indonesia as a primary source in the international pearl trade.
This structure differs from that of most faceted gemstones used in Bali, which typically arrive via international distribution networks. South Sea pearls originate domestically before entering export and trade channels.
Pearl farming constitutes the upstream production stage. Jewellery manufacturing operates downstream. Some pearl farms vertically integrate and maintain their own jewellery lines or assembly facilities. Most Bali-based workshops, however, operate independently of farming operations and source pearls as components within their fabrication process.
Geographic proximity to pearl-producing regions can reduce the need for intermediaries when supply relationships are direct. However, pricing remains determined by quality tier, surface grading, lustre, size, and export positioning rather than by location alone.
In contrast, freshwater cultured pearls do not form part of Indonesia’s major upstream production infrastructure. Freshwater pearls are widely cultivated in dedicated freshwater farming systems outside Indonesia, most prominently in China. In Bali, freshwater pearls are typically obtained through gemstone and findings distributors rather than through domestic farming channels. Their availability reflects global trade integration rather than local cultivation capacity.
The distinction is structural. South Sea pearls link Bali’s jewellery sector to domestic marine production. Freshwater pearls, by contrast, enter the local market through international distribution networks.
